HEALTHY SNACKS AND BIRTHDAYS POLICY
This year we will continue to follow the healthy guidelines outlined by the State of NJ and our Board of Education for serving food in school. For birthdays and class parties we cannot serve cupcakes or other treats with high fat content or any treats that list the first ingredient as any form of sugar.
This year In order to assist you with planning a healthy snack for your child’s birthday I have come up with a list of some fun healthy snacks that you may send to school.
A Birthday Circus: dip animal crackers in low-fat pudding or yogurt cups.
Birthday Trail Mix: combine pretzels, popcorn, cereal, raisins, dried fruit, animal crackers, and goldfish in Ziploc bags for each child
Fruity Fun Faces: please send in chopped fruit, rice cakes, and low-fat cream cheese and we can make birthday faces in school
Apple Pies: put graham cracker crumbs and unsweetened applesauce in a cup topped with chopped apples and cinnamon
English Muffin Pizzas: English muffins, sauce, and low-fat or skim milk cheese. We can microwave these in school.Use veggies to make fun faces or your child’s birthday number on top.
Frozen Soft Pretzels: pick up a box of soft pretzels in the frozen food aisle. We can microwave them in school. You may send mustard as a side.
Vegetables and Dip: send vegetables and low fat ranch dressing and the children can dip their veggies
Fruity Stars: put fruit salad or chopped fruit in star shaped cupcake tins (found in the baking aisle) for a fun flashy snack
Chip, Chip, Hooray!: Send in little bags of pretzels or baked chips.
You may want to also consider a non-edible treat for birthdays including:
Stickers Party Favors Crayons Pencils Noise Makers Bubbles
There are some snacks that are 100% off limits and are not allowed in school including:
Cookies, Ice Cream, Donuts or Munchkins, Cake, Cupcakes, Candy, or Brownies
If you have forgotten the rules and send in one of these items, we unfortunately cannot serve it in school. We will still sing to your child and give them a special birthday crown.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Sincerely,
Miss Furlong
