The music program at the Craig School
this year is composed of kindergarten through eighth grade
general music classes. Activities begin with students in
lower grades performing simple musical activities such as
singing, clapping, as well as playing rhythmic and movement
games. Students in the middle grade levels expand upon these
activities by increasing their repertoire of singing
performances, as well as learning music vocabulary and
beginning music notation and writing skills. Upper grade
students expand upon all prior knowledge and also learn
about other areas of music such as music instrumentation,
advanced singing techniques, advanced concepts of notation,
melody, harmony as well as song structures and theory.
Introduction to music history and composers is also a part
of the upper grade classroom experience, as is learning
music keyboard (piano) skills and learning about modern
technologies involved in creating music. Students are
encouraged to work in groups within the classroom to solve
problems (collaboration) as well as to solve problems and
design projects on an individual basis. Cross curriculum
activities incorporate aspects of cultural, ethnic and
historical knowledge based upon songs selected for classroom
use, as well as math skills which are relevant to
understanding technical aspects of music. By utilizing
advanced tools of music technology to plan and implement
classroom activities, students are able to cover a broader
range of musical knowledge when compared to traditional
non-technology based lessons. for example, students may
practice singing skills, writing skills and lessons
pertaining to instrumental music in the same
session.
