Gifted and Talented Grades 3 & 4
Current Unit Activities
Aquatic Habitats
What is an aquatic habitat and what lives there? These are the questions that we are answering as the 3rd and 4th grade G&T students work through the unit. Live plants and animals are used to put together a desktop aquarium that mimics natural fresh water habitats. Students visted and studied the waters and surrounding life at the Meadowlands Environmental Center where they learned about brackish water and the life it supports.
Upcoming Unit Activities
Mystery Festival
Students will learn how to observe events in a scientific way, collect data and analyze it accurately to make decisive judgements that can be defended. All this will be done under the guise of solving a murder mystery. A mystery scene will be recreated, complete with genuine clues and a storyline to go with it. Students will draw conclusions, support them and defend them.
Rocks "Shake Rattle and Roll"
Rocks seem like living things with life cycles of their own. Students will engage in hands-on activities as they discover how rocks transform themselves through natural processes of weathering and compression. Students will visit the Sterling Hill Mine in Ogdensberg as a culminating unit activity.
Math on the Menu
We will conduct a mini Math "tour", exploring ancient games and challenging each other to come up with the best winning strategies. Students will get a chance to play Mancala, Tower of Hanoi, and a variety of Nim games. Each game appeals to the strategic thinker.
