Welcome to Mrs. Henion's Second Grade. We will have a very exciting year together. We will focus on the love of learning and the joy of reading.

The class will be working on many skills in reading:comprehension, fluency, word attack and writing skills. My students are also working in the Preventing Academic Failure reading program.  The program is very specific in the way it teaches the sequence of language skills.  The students progress from the simplest units of written language to the most complex.   It is a multisensory approach that combines visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities.  Associations are developed between the sounds of the letters (auditory), the written symbols or letters (visual), and the physical process of creating the letters (kinesthetic).  This helps the student develop the ability associate the written and oral language.

We will be working on exciting writing projects many of which we will publish so you can have a copy exhibiting the fantastic stories your children can create. The class will be working on the skills needed in order to tap into their ability to write wonderful stories. Pre-writing skills include brainstorming, mapping of both story ideas as well as vocabulary. Computers will also be used in the creation of written work.
