
GRADE 1 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 2nd and 4th marking periods. The students are learning about germs, how they are spread, and how to prevent their spread. We have had fun interactive lessons dealing with the 5 senses, family, friends, handling stress & pressure, tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. We will also discuss the heart and how to keep it healthy,how our body works, and how to care for it. The students look forward to their health class and actively participate with questions and activities.
GRADE 2 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 1st and 3rd marking periods. The students are learing about germs and how they cause disease, stress and hard times, growing & caring for their body, friendship, medicine safety, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, dental health, first aid & safety, the food pyramid and healthy snacks.
GRADE 3 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 1st and 3rd marking periods. The students are learning about good health, the skeletal system, friendship, the family, medicines, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, dental health, calcium and the milk group, 6 major classes of nutrients, and first aid.
GRADE 4 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 2nd and 4th marking periods. The students are learning about the respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems of the body. We will discuss nutrition and healthy eating. During the 4th marking period the 4th grade will participate in the "Adopt-A-Smoker" program. The students "adopt" family members who want to quit smoking. The students and I provide encouragement and valuable information to assist the adoptee with quiting. Family members who smoke are invited to volunteer for this special program.
5th-8th GRADE HEALTH
5th-8th grade health is a graded subject. Students must receive a B or better in health to remain on the honor roll. Students need a folder with pockets for Health. I tell the students this at the first class of the marking period. Every student has the opportunity to retake any test and will receive the average of the two grades.
GRADE 5 HEALTH
In the second marking period I am teaching 5th grade health.Students will meet twice weekly during this marking period. We will cover hygiene and care of the body, preventing heart disease and cancer, drug use, misuse and abuse, HIV and AIDS, The class will be separated by gender and we will discuss puberty, growth and development of girls and (separately) boys.
GRADE 6 HEALTH
Third marking period is devoted to 6th grade health. We will cover nutrition,heredity and disease, body systems review, such as the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems; alcohol and tobacco use and it's health implications.
GRADE 7 HEALTH
Fourth marking period is 7th grade health. We will meet twice weekly and will cover such topics as the male & female reproductive systems, pregnancy, contraception and the endocrine system. We will also cover AIDS/HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases, and steroid use.
GRADE 8 HEALTH
First marking period is 8th grade health. The students meet twice a week to cover such topics as HIV/AIDS, nutrition, weight, eating disorders, and alcoholism.
