GRADE 1 HEALTH
Health meets once a week (Mondays), during the 1st and 2nd marking periods. The students are learning about germs, how they are spread, and how to prevent illness. Fun interactive lessons dealing with how our body works, and how to care for it, are planned. We will also discuss the heart and how to keep it healthy. Other topics will include the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. The students look forward to their health class and actively participate with questions and activities.
GRADE 2 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 3rd and 4th marking periods. The students will learn about germs and how they cause disease, growing & caring for their body, medicine safety, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, dental health, first aid & safety, the food pyramid and healthy snacks.
GRADE 3 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 4th marking period. The students will learn about good health, the skeletal system, medicines, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, dental health, calcium and the milk group, 6 major classes of nutrients, and first aid.
GRADE 4 HEALTH
Health meets once a week during the 1st and 2nd marking periods. The students are learning about the respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems of the body. We will discuss nutrition and healthy eating. During the 2nd marking period the 4th grade will participate in the "Adopt-A-Smoker" program. The students "adopt" family members who want to quit smoking. The students and I provide encouragement and valuable information to assist the adoptee with attempting to quit smoking. Family members who smoke are invited to volunteer for this special program.
5th-8th GRADE HEALTH
5th-8th grade health is a graded subject. Students must receive a B or better in health to remain on the honor roll. Students will receive a folder with pockets for Health. Students will be graded on tests, quizzes, participation, and homework. Every student has the opportunity to retake any failed test and will receive the average of the two grades.
GRADE 5 HEALTH
In the 3rd and 4th marking periods I am teaching 5th grade health. Students will meet every Monday during this marking period. We will cover drug use, misuse and abuse, preventing heart disease and cancer, and skin cancer prevention. The family life component of health class will include puberty, menstruation, growth and development of girls and boys. A notice will be sent home informing families when the family life segment is scheduled.
GRADE 6 HEALTH
Third marking period is devoted to 6th grade health. We will cover communicable and chronic disease, nutrition, heredity and disease, alcohol and tobacco use and their health implications.
GRADE 7 HEALTH
Third and Fourth marking periods are 7th grade health. Students will meet once weekly and will cover such topics as the male & female reproductive systems, pregnancy, contraception, abstinence and the endocrine system. We will also cover AIDS/HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
GRADE 8 HEALTH
8th grade health meets Mondays during 1st and 2nd marking periods. The students cover such topics as HIV/AIDS, nutrition, weight, eating disorders, and alcoholism. Students will be watching the DVD, Super-Size Me, and calculating their own BMI.
