October

                  
        October is here and it is Miss Furlong's favorite month of school.  Not only do we begin learning our alphabet letters, but the weather is getting cooler, the leaves will change colors, and children everywhere will be picking pumpkins and Halloween costumes.  October will bring many learning opportunities and fun!

        Our learning unit for October is My Family, My Community.  The children will be making family portraits and family trees and will be learning all about different types of people and animal families.  The children will practice counting, sorting, and classifying as they make families with bear manipulatives and our rubber shape ducks in class and play a mother and baby animal matching game.

        This month includes fire prevention week.  This is  a great chance to learn about community helpers and the work that firefighters do.  The children will learn how to avoid common dangers at home and school and what to do if there is a fire.  It is a great month to check and install new smoke detectors in your home!!!!  We hope to have a visit from a real firefighter too!

        This month we will be learning letter Ss and letter Pp.  Along with letter Pp we will learn much about pumpkins and how pumpkins grow.  We are looking forward to the PTO pumpkin patch in late October and picking our own pumpkins.

        Finally in October, the children are looking forward to Halloween.  We have many fun projects planned in class to help us to continue to develop our fine motor skills including making haunted houses and other crafts.  Our Halloween parade will be very exciting and will take place on Halloween afternoon.  More details will follow!
